What Is a Community Action Agency?
Community Action Agencies are private or public nonprofit organizations that were created by the federal government in 1964 to combat poverty in geographically designated areas. Status as a Community Action Agency is the result of an explicit designation by local or state government. Community Action Agencies seek to involve the community, including elected public officials, private sector representatives, and especially low-income residents, in assessing local needs and attacking the causes and conditions of poverty. The Community Action Agency in El Dorado County is under the umbrella of the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Community Services Block Grant Program (CSBG).
In order to reduce poverty in its community, a Community Action Agency works to better focus available local, state, federal, and private resources to assist low-income individuals and families to acquire useful skills and knowledge, to gain access to new opportunities, and to achieve economic self-sufficiency.
What Is the El Dorado County Community Action Council?
Community Action Agencies are required to have a tripartite board consisting of equal parts of the local private sector, public sector, and low-income community representatives. This structure brings together community leaders from each of these groups to collaborate on developing responses to local needs. This allows for Maximum Feasible Participation in both the creation and administration of Community Action programs.
The El Dorado County Community Action Council consists of at least one-third of low-income community members, one-third of public officials, and up to one-third of private sector leaders. Members Needed
The El Dorado County Community Action Council currently has several member vacancies, including those within the Low-Income and Community Sector Membership categories. The Community Action Council is seeking to fill the member vacancies with individuals who can represent the interests and concerns of people and families with low incomes living in El Dorado County, with a special focus on housing, nutrition, and low-income program needs. Priority will be given to individuals or representatives of community organizations that demonstrate a commitment to advancing the purposes and activities of the Council. Community Action Plan (CAP)
The Community Action Plan (CAP) serves as a two (2) year roadmap demonstrating how Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) agencies plan to deliver CSBG services. The CAP identifies and assesses poverty related needs and resources in the community and establishes a detailed plan, goals and priorities for delivering those services to individuals and families most affected by poverty.
