Vital Statistics

The Office of Vital Records issues birth and death certificates, but only for births and deaths that occurred in El Dorado County during the current year or during the immediate past year. El Dorado County Office of Vital Statistics also issues Disposition Permits (burial permits) for the disposition of human remains or the transfer of remains/cremains from one location to another.

Copies of certificates for births and deaths in El Dorado County prior the current or immediate past year can be obtained at the County Recorder/Clerk's Office.

For births and deaths that occurred outside of El Dorado County, please contact the county or state where the event occurred. For California births and deaths, you can contact the California Office of Vital Records.

Birth and death certificates are issued: 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. & 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The office is closed on weekends and major holidays. For emergency death filing on weekends or holidays, Funeral Directors may call 1-(800) 901-5789.

How to Order a Birth or Death Certificate

There are multiple ways to order a birth or death certificate from the Department of Vital Statistics if the birth or death occurred in the current year. Certificate Costs

These costs are effective as of 09/23/2023:

  • Birth Certificates - $32
  • New - Home Birth Certificate - $62 (includes $30 processing fee)
  • Death Certificates - $24
  • New - Green Burial Certificate - $54 (includes $30 processing fee)
  • Still Birth Certificate - $20
  • Fetal Death Certificates - $21
  • Disposition (Burial) Permits - $12
